Three Kings eco-renovation and additions
The original 2-bedroom ex-state house was completely enveloped by the additions at each end and new exterior cladding to the existing portion. The whole brick veneer was removed (bricks reused on drive and elsewhere) and the roof tiles were replaced with corrugated Colorsteel. However, very few framed walls were demolished, thus minimising demolition waste. 140mm exterior framing to the new living areas and 45mm packing of the existing framing meant that high levels of insulation could be used in the walls. West facing windows were minimised to avoid summer overheating. Both additions are passive solar designed and therefore have tiled concrete floors to provide thermal mass to store warmth from winter sun.
